Shredded storage media fragments from a secure CD and USB shredding service

Most offices have a drawer of old CDs, DVDs and USB sticks that nobody has checked in years. They often hold backups, payroll exports, client files or CCTV footage. That’s sensitive data you’re still legally responsible for. A CD shredding service securely destroys that media so nobody can recover the data. You also get documented proof for your compliance records.

Why Old Discs and USB Sticks Are a Data Risk

Deleting files or formatting a USB stick doesn’t remove the data. Free recovery software can often bring it back within minutes. Scratching a CD doesn’t work either: the data sits in a reflective layer under the surface, so specialist tools can still read a damaged disc.

Discs and memory sticks are also small and easy to lose. A single USB stick can hold thousands of customer records, which makes it a common source of data breaches involving confidential information. Find out more in our guide on whether shredded data can be recovered.

What Storage Media Can Be Shredded?

Shredding data storage devices covers far more than computer hard drives. We permanently destroy:

  • CDs and DVDs
  • USB sticks and other portable storage
  • Mobile phones
  • ID cards and other data-bearing devices

For computer and server drives, see our hard drive destruction service. For backup tapes, read our guide to data tape disposal.

Why DIY Destruction Falls Short

Cutting a disc with scissors or snapping it in half leaves large pieces, and each piece can still hold readable data. Office shredders usually cut CDs into strips rather than small particles, and most can’t take USB sticks at all. Hitting a USB stick with a hammer often misses the tiny memory chip inside. Microwaving discs is unsafe, because it releases toxic fumes and can start a fire.

How Our CD Shredding Service Works

  1. Book: Tell us roughly how many discs and devices you have, and we’ll give you a tailored quote.
  2. Collect: We collect your media in secure, tamper-proof containers. You can also bring it to our drive-thru shredding service in Stanmore.
  3. Shred: We shred your media on-site at your premises or off-site at our secure facility.
  4. Recycle: We recycle 100% of the shredded material.
  5. Certify: We email you a Certificate of Destruction as your audit evidence.

Shred Sizes and Security Levels

The smaller the shred, the harder it is to recover anything. Many providers follow DIN 66399, now published internationally as ISO/IEC 21964. Its “O” levels cover optical discs and its “E” levels cover electronic media such as USB sticks. Each runs from level 1 (made unusable) to level 7 (top secret). For discs, the maximum particle size falls from 160 mm² at O-3 to 0.2 mm² at O-7.

General business records usually need a mid-range level. Financial, health or other sensitive data needs a higher one. If your media holds highly confidential information, talk to us about your requirements before booking.

Digital Device Shredding and UK GDPR

UK GDPR requires you to keep personal data secure until it’s destroyed. That responsibility stays with you even when a contractor handles the disposal. Digital device shredding with a certificate gives you clear proof that you met that duty. The National Cyber Security Centre explains more in its guidance on secure sanitisation and disposal of storage media.

Disk Destruction Service or Hardware Destruction?

A disk destruction service suits loose media, such as boxes of CDs, DVDs and USB sticks. Hardware destruction suits whole laptops, desktops, servers, phones and tablets. Our IT equipment disposal service removes all data first, then sends the equipment through approved recycling channels, with Waste Transfer Notes for your records. If you’re moving office or upgrading IT, we can handle both in one collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CD shredding service?

It’s a professional service that securely destroys CDs, DVDs and similar discs by cutting them into small particles, so the data can’t be recovered. You receive a Certificate of Destruction as proof.

Can you shred USB sticks?

Yes. We shred USB sticks and other portable storage devices alongside CDs, DVDs and mobile phones.

Is breaking a CD in half enough?

No. Each half can still hold readable data. Shredding into small particles is the only reliable option for sensitive data.

Can I drop off discs and USB sticks myself?

Yes. Our drive-thru in Stanmore accepts electronic media as well as paper, so you can drop items off without leaving your car.
